Whether your goal is a quick pick up game or making it to the pros, the equipment you'll need to get started is the same: a basketball and a hoop. As such, that makes basketball one of the easiest and least expensive sports to participate in. Bargain hunters can cut their costs even farther but fulfilling their basketball equipment needs on sale at a discount shop, or get it even cheaper used at one of many resale stores. In many cases, you may be able to purchase discounted or used basketball equipment well below wholesale prices. The best thing about basketball is you can play no matter the weather outside. You can schedule some court time at the local gym, but there is nothing better than an outdoor game. Set up a portable basketball goal in your driveway, or meet your homeboys down on the playground, and the game is on. If you are looking for more than a friendly game, you'll want to find a good coach to help you with shooting and defense training. You'll probably be looking for top of the line basketball equipment, too. Brands like Mammoth and Huffy might cost you a little more, but will last you a lifetime. Basketball is a game for any age and the equipment can grow with you. Start the kids off with a youth sized goal while they are still in diapers and work them up to league regulation equipment. A word to the wise, though. Kids grow fast. Consider investing in an adjustable height goal. It will give them the opportunity to play like the big boys while still having a real chance at making a basket on their own. Who knows, they may grow up and turn pro.
