Lacrosse Equipment

Dating back to the 1400's, lacrosse is one of the oldest sports in North America. Lacrosse began as an Indian game and teams was often made up of 100 to 1,000 braves on each side. The goals were usually 500-yards or more apart. Trees or boulders were used as goals, and a score was recorded by hitting the tree or boulder with a ball. These games often lasted all day and could stretch over two or three days. Lacrosse was originally played to toughen braves for actual combat.

Since then, lacrosse has come a long way. In 1900, it was first included in Olympic competition and the game rules and equipment became standardized. Lacrosse continued to grow in America and internationally during the mid-1900's and today is played at more than 500 colleges and universities in the U.S., as well as numerous high schools. The trend is now gaining popularity with women, too. Over 200 high schools, colleges, and universities now sponsor women's lacrosse teams.

Lacrosse is a combination of basketball, soccer and hockey. It can be played by anyone as it requires coordination, speed, and agility, not brawn. Lacrosse is fast-paced with long sprints up and down the field, abrupt starts and stops, and precision passes and dodges. Lacrosse is played with a stick called the crosse, which is used to throw, catch and scoop the ball.

The standard equipment for playing lacrosse is basically the same for both boys and girls. A player needs: lacrosse stick, gloves and pads, helmet, mouthpiece, eye protection, and cleats. The goals are no longer trees or boulders, rather nylon nets. And often players will invest in rebounder walls or shooting targets to help in their training.

The best way to find a deal on lacrosse equipment is to shop around, or check with other players or resell shops for used equipment. If you are shopping online, don't forget to look for discounts on shipping costs. Even the best deal can be expensive after shipping charges are calculated in.
