Screen printing is the process by which ink is transferred through a porous screen, such as nylon, onto the item to be decorated. The item to be decorated could be anything from silk to glass to plastic. An emulsion, or stencil, is used to block out the negative, or non-printing area of the screen. Once this is a set up, a squeegee forces ink through the open areas of the screen onto the item to be decorated.
This process originates from Japanese stenciling on silk, but what may seem like a simple, ancient art is big business today. You can find screen printing on everything from posters and graphic printing on t-shirts to home décor items, and yes, even pens. As such, competition is fierce and quality equipment can make the difference between success and failure.
Modern day screen printing equipment comes in both manual and automatic printing processes. In addition to the actual printing equipment, businesses also invest in infrared dryers, gas dryers, different types of curing units, automatic take off equipment, and other ancillary equipment like silk screen registration systems. Depending on the size of the operations, the business may also need folding equipment, conveyor systems, and bagging and package equipment.
It is easy to see that custom screen printing can start out as a small business and grow as big as you want it to, provided you can finance your equipment needs to keep up with the demand.
One way to save a buck while you build the business is to invest in used screen printing equipment. If you can find what you need used, you can save up to 70% off the cost of new. But making it in the screen printing business takes more than good equipment. It takes finding a niche and providing quality product on a timely basis. If you can do this, you have ever chance of succeeding in screen print.
